THE MESSENGER

Concordia Lutheran Church

Volume  LXXV         February  2012          Issue 2

Dear enlightened ones,

Epiphany rejoices in the sure and certain hope we have in the Light of Jesus Christ. It is a season of light – the Savior’s perfect light removes the grip of darkness. The Light of the Son rules in our hearts and directs our vision beyond this dark world so we can live for Him now. And “the Holy Spirit calls us by the Gospel, enlightens us with His gifts, sanctifies, and keeps us in the true faith.” Epiphany commemorates the discovery that the Light of God had arrived to bring righteousness into a sinful world and reveal the unimaginable depth of God's love.

Lent provides us with an excellent opportunity to study the life of Jesus more closely, and to learn even more about what His suffering, death, and resurrection means for a sinful world. Some of the most important lessons our Lord teaches us with His life, especially during His last days of His earthly ministry, are the lessons of repentance, compassion, humility, service, obedience, perseverance, and sacrifice.

One of the first lessons of Lent is repentance. Often repentance is misunderstood by Christians when we focus upon our efforts to first “change our ways” instead of looking at repentance as a gift from God to reconcile us. The key concept to understanding Christian repentance is the idea “gift” language. We simply receive gifts. I think much of the frustration about repentance occurs when we try to turn away from the enticements and temptations of our sins FIRST and THEN turn to God. That’s backward and impossible for us to change. Repentance is something we receive as we let God have His way with us and change us by His love. As we first turn to God’s loving-kindness then we want to turn away from our sins and receive repentance.

Turning away from our sins can be the most difficult task we’ve ever had to face and impossible, if we don’t first turn to God’s loving-kindness and grace. Several times each school year I ask a question of the catechumens (Catechism class). I ask, “Are you forgiven because you repent?” [or] “Do you repent because you are forgiven?” The first option puts the onus on us. The second option puts the onus on God with the gift of forgiveness already a reality. Remember the parable of the Prodigal Son? The prodigal (young) son returned home because he already knew of his father’s love for him. The young son thought he’d somehow have to earn his way back, but his father ran out to meet him, fell on him with a heartfelt embrace and tears of joy. The father’s gift of love wiped out his son’s past.

Turning toward God and trusting beforehand in His mercy and grace we can confess our sins and look forward to a much different future. Forgiveness, grace, hope, peace, and everlasting life await those who turn back to God’s love, empowered to repent of our sins. We want to run to worship services and receive His gifts in Word and sacraments. Worship is essential for Christians as it strengthens our faith in Christ who has made possible a “right-relationship” with God and a blissful future with Him forever.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

The Ash Wednesday services are on Wednesday, February 22, at noon and at 7 PM. We will again include the “imposition of ashes” this year applying the Lenten ashes to those who choose to come forward.

“O my people, put on sackcloth and roll in the ashes; mourn with bitter wailing  as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us” (Jeremiah 6:26).

Signs are a part of our everyday lives. Signs are also significant in our spiritual life. On Ash Wednesday we will again be offered the mark of ashes as we meditate on all that Christ’s life, death, and resurrection accomplished for humanity.

The Imposition of Ashes is a rite practiced by many Lutheran churches. During the worship services on Wednesday, February 22nd, those who desire to receive the ashen cross on their forehead may come forward and stand before the chancel steps. Pastor will apply ashes to each person (all ages) with the words, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19)

Many millions of Christians around the world on Ash Wednesday gather to mark the beginning of the Lenten baptismal preparation for Easter. Receiving the ashen cross on their forehead is a gesture rooted in the Baptism rite as we hear the somber proclamation to prepare during Lent for Easter Sunday. While marked with the ashes of human mortality the church hears God’s promise and tastes of God’s mercy in the forgiveness of sins. From the solemn liturgy of Ash Wednesday the church moves along its journey with the Savior on His downward way to Calvary’s cross on Good Friday and, then, to the empty tomb on Easter Sunday.

LENTEN WORSHIP

“Letting God Have His Way”

The story of Jesus' passion involves people - and lots of them. Granted, the story is primarily about Jesus. It is His suffering, death, and resurrection that we follow in the passion story, but we can learn from the other characters in this divine drama, as well. If we look closely we might even see our own life experiences reflected in theirs. Beginning with King David, Jesus' royal ancestor, who lived a thousand years before the passion of Jesus, and extending to Mary Magdalene, the first person to see the risen Christ, we encounter numerous people who are like us in many ways. They were a rich mixture of conflicting emotions, doubts, fears, and faith just as we are today. The followers of Jesus during His earthly ministry learned to let God have His way with them as they witnessed His passion and march to the cross in order to rescue humanity. May we let God have His way with us this Lenten season that our faith increase in who Jesus is and what He did that we might have salvation.

LENTEN CHALLENGE for 2012

From Ash Wednesday, February through Easter Sunday, April 8th the Lenten challenge for Concordia's beloved congregation is to read two chapters each day of the book of Hebrews. It is a book often overlooked and bypassed by Christians. The author of Hebrews, unidentified, sees events, persons, and actions as prefiguring that which came to full reality and completion in Christ Jesus. The book contrasts Christ Jesus with other people and Old Testament rites and practices as "superior." The term "better" is used twelve times and the term "superior" is used three times. Three primary characteristics of the Book of Hebrews is that (1) it is anchored in the Old Testament, (2) centered on Christ Jesus, and (3) declares all days since Calvary's cross as the "last days." The central theme of Hebrews is the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the only fulfillment and mediator of God's grace and salvation.
