THE MESSENGER

Concordia Lutheran Church

Volume  LXXIII         August  2010          Issue 8

“The Privilege of Worship”

2 Chronicles 30:8 (ESV) “Do not now be stiff‑necked as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the Lord and come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever, and serve the Lord your God.”

Hebrews 10:24‑25 (ESV)  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, [25] not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Psalm 26:8 (ESV) “O Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.”

Psalm 122:1 (ESV) “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’”

Acts 2:42 (ESV) “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

Acts 20:7 (ESV)  “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread….”

Deuteronomy 12:5-6, 8, 11 (ESV)  “But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put His name and make His habitation there. There you shall go, [6] and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.  [8] You shall not do as we do here today, everyone as he sees fit..... [11] to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there.”

Christian worship has a place. It carries God’s name (God’s house filled with His people who love Him enough to worship Him) from the very beginning way back in ancient times until the Christ comes again. We come together in His name and for His purposes as He gives us His good gifts in worship. We come assemble as the family of God, like a family reunion each week, to feast on His good gifts: the promises in His holy Word and the sacraments and receive the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. We worship “our Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”

together as relatives assembled here each week at Concordia Lutheran Church. We are joined together like a human body through the work of the Triune God. When even one member of this body is missing from worship we all are the less for it. When each member joins this body in worship we are all the greater for it.

“I Love Owing My Father!”

A young woman with financial struggles and an old car of dubious life span was surprised when her father presented her with a brand new automobile and the words, “pay us back as you can.”  Deeply touched, she found herself redoubling her efforts at work and began immediately to repay her dad.  At every pay period, the first check she wrote was to her father, and every payment, she said, felt good. When a friend urged her not to be in such a hurry to hand off money to her own father, the young woman said, “My father doesn’t need anything, and I’ve never known what to buy him. Now I have a way to show him what he means to me. I love owing my father.” Like this young woman we are thrilled to give back to the One who first gave to us.

Christian Stewardship is that joyful activity of God’s people living all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes. There are so many good things Concordia’s congregation is committed to in carrying out the Great Commission in our community and around the world. This faithful congregation supports Risen Lord, Resurrection, Synod and District, U of L campus ministry, missionaries, Highland Community Ministries, Lutheran Federation, Camp Cedarbrook, immigrant ministry, L.W.M.L., Kids Kloset, our community’s poor and needy, and many more. We can take great joy that God is using us to reach out with the Good News of Christ Jesus in so many ways to so many people. We are inspired and moved by God’s great love for us. He has given us the future with Him. We respond eagerly to offer our time, talent, and treasure to God’s vision and glory. We love owing our Father.

Lift High the Cross.

Acknowledging Our Beloved Acolytes and Crucifers

The youth in our midst serve the Lord in worship services as an acolyte or a crucifer. Their service has been a blessing to us and often times the acolytes and crucifers volunteer to substitute, vest, and serve in services they weren’t scheduled. We have a wonderful core of youth who faithfully serve the Lord, Jesus, in worship services and we can shower all of Concordia’s youth with encouragement to participate. If there are any constructive critiques of any rubrics or how the acolytes and crucifers perform their duties, then please offer them directly to me. Thank you for your compassion and support for our youth.  --Pastor Boyd.

Training for New Acolytes

Pastor will have a training session on Sunday, August 29, after the late service to help new acolytes feel comfortable serving.

Worship Assistants

Would you care to serve as a lector, usher, greeter, nursery worker, or altar guild member? We love it when additional people serve in these capacities. Please write it on the worship attendance card or call the church office if you would like to serve in one or more of these ways.

Notes & Thank Yous

Thank you very much to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Richard loved going to church and hearing God’s word. He felt the highlight of his life was being baptized and becoming a family member of the church. I am so thankful that the Lord opened up his heart and he believed in forgiveness of sins and life everlasting. He loved the friendliness of everyone and was always amazed that people remembered his name. You all meant so much to him.

Thank you and God’s Richest Blessings to Everyone.

     Ruth Rozel

May Christ continue to feed you and fill you with His most gracious gifts!
