THE MESSENGER

Concordia Lutheran Church

Volume  LXXI          May  2008          Issue 5

Greetings in the Lord,

On April 22 Pastor Jacob Gillard, his wife Michelle, and their daughters Amelia and Evangeline visited Concordia and made a presentation on their upcoming mission work in Uganda. Jacob has served parishes in Maryland and Minnesota since he graduated from the seminary 7 years ago, and he has now accepted a call from LCMS World Mission to help train church leaders of the Lutheran Church Mission Uganda (LCMU).

The LCMU has 63 congregations but only one pastor and one deaconess, so much of the ministry there is done by lay leaders. Pastor Gillard will be teaching and training those lay leaders. Michelle and the girls will also be involved by inviting families and children to Christian “story hours” that they will host.

This remarkable church body is only 13 years old but is growing by leaps and bounds. For many years they have requested that the Missouri Synod provide a person to train lay leaders, and the Synod is finally able for the first time to honor that request.

The Gillards will be going to Uganda (in East Africa) in October and will be living in the capital city, Kampala. After two years they will come to the States for two months and then return. Because English is the official language of Uganda, all of the teaching will be in English.

Please pray for the Gillards as they serve in Uganda. They are enthusiastic and Spirit-filled as they enter this exciting ministry.

You may also support their ministry financially with one-time or recurring gifts. You may go to www.lcms.org?12893 to give a gift, or send a gift to LCMS Mission Senders, 1333 S. Kirkwood Rd., St. Louis, MO 63122-7295 indicating that this is support for Rev. Jacob Gillard. Recurring gifts may be by checks, automatic withdrawal, or credit card. There are some packets for further information in the foyer. The Gillards will be happy to have email contact with people; their address is jacob.gillard@lcms.org. Their blog is ugandaconnection.wordpress.com.

It is also possible for the congregation to vote to support this mission as a parish. Dean Donnell of the board of evangelism has a packet of information if Concordia wishes to do this.

v      v      v

In another hour I will be leaving to drive to Ft. Wayne for the call service at which both Steve Gettinger and Brad Stadsvold expect to receive calls. This is very exciting! [The results of this special evening will be printed elsewhere in this newsletter.]

We have been contacted by WHAS radio and by 790 radio about the possibility of broadcasting on Sunday mornings. They require a one-year commitment. The WHAS opportunity follows “The Lutheran Hour” and would be from 7:00 to 7:30. It would cost $500 per week. The 790 option is from 8:30 to 9:00 for $150 per week. We cannot put anything like this into the budget, but if anyone is interested in sponsoring some of this, please contact Pastor Peters or Matt Helmkamp. This may or may not be something Concordia wishes to do. During the day, WHAS reaches 6 states and has an average listening audience Sunday through Saturday of 12,000 in a 15-minute period. WHAS is 50,000 watts, “clear channel”; 790 is 5,000 watts.

May God bless you richly.

In this month’s article I would like to comment on a couple of different items.

First, a wonderful fellowship meal was had involving the people of Risen Lord and Concordia Lutheran. You could say it was kind of like a mother/daughter banquet (sorry…. I could not resist the connection). There were about 57 people who attended worship at Risen Lord and over 100 for the fellowship meal. It was a splendid time together. I would like to thank all the people who came out and who helped out.

The second thing is that the LWML of Concordia has purchased a brand new shiny communion set and I got to pick it out. It is a beautiful gift from Concordia to Risen Lord. It is wonderful to think that the gift of our Lord’s body and blood will be distributed in a gift given in love.

The third thing I would like to comment on is something that had been on my mind quite a bit lately and that is the call service on April 23, 2008, at 7 PM at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Little did I realize when I was growing up in Fort Wayne that I would one day stand in the Chapel at the Lutheran Seminary and hear these words spoken; “Stephen Gettinger, mission planter at Risen Lord Lutheran Church Taylorsville, Kentucky.” Those words have changed the direction of my life. It is a direction that requires me to walk by faith one step at a time and one day at a time. But I do not walk alone, I walk with my Lord who came to me as a little eight-year-old boy and put faith in his heart by His Word and His Spirit. That shy and timid little boy has grown up and been called to boldly proclaim Christ crucified and risen from the dead for the forgiveness of sins. Pray that I may do so faithfully until I draw my dying breath.

In closing, I want to thank Pastor Peters and the people of Concordia Lutheran Church for being God’s hands extended in my life and the life of my family. You have taken us in and made us a part of your family. You have given of your time, talent and treasure to give me a wonderful and full vicarage. Then you allowed yourselves to be used by the Holy Spirit to submit a call to the seminary, so that I could be called to serve as a mission planter at Risen Lord Lutheran Church. May God continue to richly bless you as we work side by side to see this daughter church grown from her infancy into a mature, self-sufficient adult.

Serving our Risen Lord at Risen Lord,

Vicar Steve Gettinger

A volunteer is also needed from 4:30 to 6:30 PM to close the church. Please let the church office or Pastor know if you can help with this.

New Parenting Class to be Offered in May

To help their children grow into healthy adults, parents need to teach them how to take responsibility for their behavior, their values, and their lives. The authors of the Gold Medallion award-winning book Boundaries bring their biblically-based principles to bear on the challenging task of child-rearing, showing parents how to bring control to an out-of-control family life, how to set limits and still be loving parents, how to define legitimate boundaries for the family, and how to install in children a godly character.

Please let Mary Eschels (897-0289) know if you will be attending this class, which starts on May 4, so that enough materials can be ordered.

Luther’s Writings Study Group

Concordia hosts a study group every other Thursday evening at 7:30 PM to discuss some of Luther’s writings. Please come if you are interested, and invite others. This is open to people of all religious backgrounds. A one-volume collection of Luther’s writings is used. It is available in the office for $34.50. (Three free copies are available for people for whom the cost is a problem.)  The topic for May 8 is “Order of Mass and Communion,” 303-316. The topic for May 15 is “Eight Sermons at Wittenberg,” part 1, pp. 282-290.

Home Visits

Pastor Peters would like to make a few home visits during May (in addition to the homebound visits) and has set aside Friday, May 23 for this purpose. Visits are possible at 10 AM, 1 PM, and 2:30 PM. If you would be free during this time to visit with Pastor Peters in your home, please call the church office or Pastor.

Book Discussion Group

The Book Discussion Group meets every two months to discuss a novel or a non-fiction book. The discussion on The Chamber by John Grisham ($7)) will be on Wednesday, June 4, at 7 PM. The following books will be: Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer (11.25), and Exodus by Leon Uris ($6.50). The books are available in the church office.

Fellowship Meals

We have a Sunday noon fellowship meal each month. The group serving the fellowship meal can keep the extra receipts for its functions. If your group wishes to sign up for a meal, you may do so on the bulletin board. Fellowship meal Sundays are wonderful times to invite guests to worship!

The April potluck fellowship meal at Risen Lord was a great success. Over 100 people had a wonderful time including 34 families (75 people) from Concordia.

The fellowship meal on Sunday, May 4, will be a benefit for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The food will be provided; free-will offering. Everyone is invited; please come and invite friends. Please contact Marlene Helmkamp if you can help with the meal.

Katrina Relief Efforts

Another rebuilding trip to Biloxi, MS is in the works and 6-10 volunteers are needed for each of the 4 weeks during the month of June, 2008.

Week #1 workdays are June 2- 6, week #2 workdays are June 9- 13, week #3 workdays are June 16-20, and week #4 workdays are June 23- 27. We work from 8 AM to 5 PM each day with one hour out for lunch. We will be traveling on the weekends and arrival is expected on Sunday afternoon sometime prior to dinner at 6 PM.

The Indiana District LCMS is sponsoring 4 homes to be rebuilt there again this year and they will also be covering our volunteers’ room and board expenses. We will be staying in Camp Biloxi (located behind Good Shepherd Lutheran Church) and will once again be working with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia rebuilding homes along the Gulf Coast.

Those with questions, wanting more detailed information, or interested in volunteering to serve during one of these 4 weeks should contact Mike Bultemeier ASAP at (260) 485-1416 or by e-mail at mgb33dodge@msn.com.

The citizens of the Gulf Coast fear that they are being forgotten since it has been over 2 ½ years since Hurricane Katrina decimated their beautiful shoreline and destroyed their homes. God has richly blessed us with many opportunities to serve Him and His people. If you are ready, willing, and able, please say a prayer and consider serving God’s children in their time of need. If you can’t join in this effort, please keep all of our volunteers in your prayers during the month of June asking for their safe travel to and from Biloxi, their safety on the job, and that the reconstruction process move forward diligently and swiftly.

Lawn Mowing & Flower Care

A number of volunteers are needed to maintain our church grounds (grass-cutting, etc.). Those willing to help out can contact the church office or put their name on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the foyer. We would also like those who are willing to help with the flower beds to sign up in the foyer. Pastor keeps a hoe in his office for anyone to use. J

From South India:  “Greetings in the name of our dear Savior, Jesus Christ. I am living in Namakkal. My age is 80. My wife has gone to heaven to be with her Savior. I fell down four years ago and broke some bones in my leg. Now I walk slowly in the streets and distribute Gospel tracts to the Hindus. Some will receive them, but most will not. But I will not fear. I will do this small ministry till my death. I enter their houses and tell them about Jesus and pray for their salvation. When I walk along the streets, small children who are playing will come to me and ask me to pray for them. I stop and pray for their health, education, and salvation. Please pray for my ministry. I humbly beg you to send me 20 English large print bibles and Christian literature.”
